Background

In 2022, Timberbank was invit-ed by HKIPF to make external wall and furnitures for Koon Man School -an abandoned school in Tai Mo Shan.

The defunct village school was converted it into a communal art space dedicated to contemporary photography. With the unique cultural landscape of Chuen Lung and its area as the foundation, Koon Man Space aims to expand image-making, discussion, learning, and imagination to the culture and history of the village, as well as its local ecology.

Chuen Lung Koon Man School is an abandoned school located on Tai Mo Shan Road. One of the most iconic features is the presence of two giant eucalyptus trees near the entranceand a white archway with black letters, which serves as a prominent landmark for drivers.

Design Brief

The exterior walls of the Koon Man Space are designed with individual window frames adorned with wooden strips, creating a view-finder for observing the ecology of Chuen Lung from moving car windows.

Koon Man Space has several activity rooms available for resident artists to organize activi-ties and showcase their events to the publics. The sliding doors of the built-in cabinets are made with eucalyptus wooden strips, creating a natural gradient of colors as “wooden color pencils”.

ReCYCLE story

Coincidentally, Timberbank salvaged a deceased eucalyptus tree from Chuen Lung in 2020. The tree had succumbed to illness and needed to be urgently removed due to the risk of collapsing onto nearby residential areas in the valley. The tree was of significant size, requiring an entire day to be cut into multiple sections for recycling. During the process, there was an interesting incident that occurred.

The eucalyptus tree had a rotten core with a long hollow cavity housing a large colony of bees.

The arborists faced the risk of disturbing the hive while cutting down the tree. Luckily, a beekeeper we knew safely relocated the bees and left behind delicious honey. Bees can be friendly!

This eucalyptus tree finally transformed into the wooden strips that adorn Koon Man Space.

Home run it is!
