ReCYCLE story
The timber used was salvaged Khaya senegalensis (or African Mahogany) collected from a felled tree project in Sheung Shui in 2021. The trees were then sent to Timberbank and further measured and milled to sizes to prepare for the bar.
ReDESIGN
The challenge at hand was no small feat: to transform an 8-meter long bulbous bow-shaped bar design into a breathtaking timber creation. HKTimberbank approached this endeavor with meticulous precision, deconstructing the design intent into relevant pieces that harmoniously matched salvaged Mahogany logs in both size and quality. Through an intricate process of kiln drying, CNC shaping, and meticulous manual sculpting and polishing, the timber pieces were brought to life, capturing the essence of the original vision.
Versatility and practicality were key considerations in the construction process. Each timber piece was carefully cut, indexed, and affixed to a robust steel frame, allowing for effortless relocation and seamless on-site installation. Picture the moonlit night when these crafted elements were skillfully maneuvered by crane to the third floor of the iconic Landmark building. With a dedicated team of ten, the final assembly unfolded, ensuring every element converged flawlessly to create a unified and harmonious whole.
The sleek black polish that adorns the bar serves as both a veil and a revelation, partially obscuring and yet unveiling the subtleties of the Mahogany wood’s captivating red-goldish grain. This interplay of darkness and light, of concealment and revelation, adds an element of intrigue and sophistication to the overall ambiance of Ami Wood Ear Whisky Bar.
